The Best Reason IS The Season
Thanks to “The Other Bill” for inviting me out for a quick round at Timmons on Saturday. I played terrible frolf. My drives were bad and the putts much worse. Lucky for me, we’d decided to play in the bitter cold, 23 degrees at the first tee. Plus :
- The wind was blowing making putts much tougher.
- All the extra layers of clothing I had to wear in that weather limited my flexibility.
- The cold weather made my already aching body that much worse.
- The dog ate my homework.
- College is expensive.
Now, at least 2 of the above excuses are true. A third is stolen from an old friend of mine, and one excuse is just plain false.
It wasn’t that windy.
I’m still getting some rounds in during this awful cold snap but my play has been terrible. I had one good round at Century Park last Sunday (good enough to win me a free lunch) but otherwise I’ve been terrible.
That said, I have a new zen motto for the year and it’s helped me find reasons to love playing this month.
The motto, which I can only paraphrase here, is “Enjoy myself all the time”.
So what’s to enjoy in bitter cold while playing bad frolf?
I’ve never had more excuses for why I stink!
Game on!
Yeah, the three consecutive 5′s on 12,13 and 14 put a damper on an otherwise enjoyable round but it’s not about the score, it’s about getting all the bad rounds out of the way before tournament time. Second round was better but still couldn’t reliably throw a forehand, so I stopped doing it.
I have some friends coming up from Columbia to play Boiling Springs in advance of the Ice Bowl if you want to join us, not sure what day yet but they probably need to make it a Sunday. I do have, however, some ‘bigger’ plans for MLK day if you’re available- Nate and perhaps one or two other people and I are all going to Winthrop to play the gold course layout without ropes. That’s kind of an all-day commitment though, but you are more than welcome to join us- we need a lefty for variety and amusement.
And don’t forget the all-time favorite:
- the sun was in my eyes
